Euclidian distance

The distance between two points can be obtained if the coordinates of the points in a two-dimensional plane are known. Usually the coordinates are denoted by x and y. For instance the distance D between a and b is:

For n dimensions it is not practical to indicate dimensions alphabetically, hence it is:

where the subscripts refer to the dimensions, so the position with regard to the x-axis of point a is a1, etc.
